You agree that you are responsible for your own communications with respect to any use of the Collaboration Tools and for any consequences thereof, and you agree to use these tools only to post, send, and receive messages and material that are proper and related to the particular learning environment. By way of example, and not as a limitation, you agree that when using a Collaborative Tool you will do so in a professional manner and you will not:

Defame, abuse, harass, stalk, threaten or otherwise violate the legal rights of others;

Publish, post, gesture in-world, upload, distribute, or transmit any topic, material, information or other content that is unlawful, harmful, threatening, abusive, harassing, defamatory, libelous, inappropriate in a professional setting, profane, obscene, indecent, objectionable or discriminatory based on race, religion, ethnicity, gender, age, or veteran status;

Post material containing software or other material protected by intellectual property laws unless you own or control the rights thereto or have received all necessary consents;

Post files that contain viruses, malware, corrupted files or any other similar software or programs that may damage the operation of another user's computer or network;
Advertise, offer to sell or buy any goods or services for any business purpose;

Conduct or forward surveys, chain letters or any form of solicitation;

Download any file posted by another user that you know, or reasonably should know, cannot be legally distributed in such manner;
Impersonate, or falsely state or otherwise misrepresent your affiliation with any other person or organization;

Falsify or delete any author attribution, legal or other proper notice or proprietary designation or the label of the origin of material;

Interfere with other users from using odesie®;

List or collect information about other users, including e-mail addresses, without their consent;

or

Violate any applicable laws, regulations, or user company policies, including the communication of proprietary materials of your employer to third parties.

How many work order classifications do you really have?

Preventative Maintenance, Repairs, Predictive Maintenance, Corrective Maintenance, Upgrades, Warranty, Service contract completed......This list gets really big, really fast.

Why does it get so big? KPIs or Key Performance Indicators thats why. You know the set of numbers that are used to determine if the maintenance department is doing a good job. Things like Uptime, Downtime, OEE, Ratios of PM to Corrective work orders and the like.

Should we get rid of KPIs? NO. According to Edward Deming you can only achieve what you measure. So yes KPIs are important. But make sure that the results are the important element of the KPI. Not just getting a set of numbers to be high-lighted green on a spreadsheet that gets emailed to your boss. Working the system to make the numbers look good doesn't help you in the long run, running your organization based on solid data driven decisions is what drives lasting improvement.

As for what types of work are there in a maintenance world? Only two. Planned work and Unplanned work. Planned work includes scheduled PM items, PDM, scheduled and thought out repairs. Planning work allows you to manage your resources, the key phrase being "allows you to manage." Unplanned work, the work required when a critical piece of plant equipment fails and requires half your techs to do overtime to get the plant back up, allows the plant to manage you!

If you missed it on Sunday, the New York Times published an article discussing Apple's highly secretive internal training program. When you have a free moment today, I highly recommend giving it a read: Simplifying the Bull: How Picasso Helps to Teach Apple’s Style http://www.nytimes.com/2014/08/11/technology/-inside-apples-internal-training-program-.html?_r=1

The part of the article that I found most interesting was the discussion about how the school itself functions. One feature of it being that Apple runs the school completely in-house:

"Unlike many corporations, Apple runs its training in-house, year round. The full-time faculty — including instructors, writers and editors — create and teach the courses. Some faculty members come from universities like Yale; Harvard; the University of California, Berkeley; Stanford; and M.I.T., and some continue to hold positions at their schools while working for Apple."

This got me wondering, are in-house training programs really all that rare, as the author seems to imply?

I know that my company, Technology Transfer Services, runs all of its employee training internally. But maybe that isn't true for a majority of companies? After all, part of TTS's core business is providing technical training to industrial and manufacturing companies (including some of the largest companies in the world such as ExxonMobil, Caterpillar, and Walgreens). For TTS, It makes sense to use those same training resources to train the company's own personnel.

How about your own company? Do they perform their own in-house training or outsource it to a third party? What do you see as the benefits and disadvantages of either method?
